TROPICAL STORM ZETA UPDATE 6
Tropical Storm Zeta is about 450 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, according to the latest update from the National Weather Service.
The storm is expected to regain hurricane strengthen later today and continue to move toward the southeast Louisiana coastline. A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for Kenner and the metropolitan New Orleans area. Zeta is expected to make landfall Wednesday afternoon or Wednesday evening as a Category 1 hurricane, forecasters said.
The storm is moving very quickly and is expected to be out of the area about 6 hours after making landfall. The main impacts, according to forecasters, will be strong winds and some heavy rain. Tropical storm force winds are expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon and remain throughout the day with some gusts as high as 75 mph. Downed trees and power lines are possible, as well as power outages. Residents are reminded not to touch any downed power lines and to contact Entergy at 1-800-968-8243 if they see a downed line.
While wind is expected to be the most significant impact, 2 to 4 inches of rain with some locally heavier amounts is possible. Isolated tornadoes also are a possibility.
Residents should remain inside, if possible, during the storm. For those who must drive, operators of high profile vehicles and anyone driving on elevated roadways should take extra precautions because of the strong winds expected.
Mayor Zahn and the staff of the Emergency Management Department urge residents to complete all preparations for the storm. Please clean out storm drains and secure any loose items outside. Bring in any Halloween decorations temporarily, although the forecast after the storm passes and through the weekend is for good weather with virtually no chance of rain. Have a storm plan in place and be sure to have emergency supplies and medications on hand for all members of the family, including pets.
